How an IBCLC can help you
Lactation Consultant • August 15, 2021
Professional breastfeeding care can help families get a good start with breastfeeding. When you experience difficulties with breastfeeding or chestfeeding, you need an IBCLC–a healthcare provider who specializes in the clinical management of breastfeeding and can help families with many feeding challenges.
The IBCLC is the highest level of specialization available in lactation. An IBCLC works in partnership with your healthcare team to provide expert lactation care in routine and high-risk situations. IBCLCs are board certified only after rigorous training, thousands of clinical counseling hours, and passing a comprehensive medical exam. An IBCLC has the expertise and training to help with a variety of breastfeeding challenges.
Common Challenges for Parents
Breastfeeding your baby can be hard sometimes. It can also be a wonderful experience. You do not have to fix breastfeeding problems alone. Some of the things I can help you with include:
Sore nipples or cracked nipples
Low milk supply
Oversupply
Exclusively Pumping
Returning to work or school
Plugged ducts and mastitis
Breast reduction, augmentation, or other breast surgery
Breast pain
Breastfeeding/Chestfeeding after cesarean
Breast pain
Common challenges for babies
Babies are born with reflexes and instincts that enable breastfeeding. Some babies need a little help figuring things out. And some babies have anatomical or medical challenges that make breastfeeding more difficult for them. I can help you sort out feeding problems like:
Tongue tie and lip tie
Slow weight gain
Latch and positioning assistance
Bottle refusal
Breast refusal
Infant reflux
Premature birth
Balancing breast and bottle
Torticollis and other structural challenges
Weaning (baby led, emergency)
Other common breastfeeding challenges
Multiples – twins, triplets
LGBTQ-specific concerns
Co-nursing
Managing supplements
Inducing lactation
Sleep concerns
Adoptive breastfeeding
Nipple shields (how to use/how to wean from)
And many others…
